Maastricht, At Last

Well Earned

Bucket list item?

Well, perhaps… except I have no such list. I have a wish list.

Sint Amorsplein

The Treaty of Maastricht (1992) had a defining role in a good chunk of my career as a lawyer. I was always a little curious about the city, and what it is about the place which merits the honour of lending its name to such an important treaty.

At last I got there in May 2025 with a KLM flight to Amsterdam, an overnight stay in Utrecht, and then a 2 hour train journey with Nederlandse Spoorwegen (or “NS”, to simplify matters). I spent two nights in the city staying in the Garner Hotel. It is across the street from the MVV stadium at Geusselt, a 15 minute walk (or 5 minute cycle) from the main railway station.

Maastricht Station

I had never been to that part of the Netherlands (Limburg Region) before and it was interesting to see that some areas are canal free.

Vrijthof

My stay was too short. I should go back…

What makes this post stand out is the way it combines clarity, good structure, and an accessible tone, which together create a reading experience that feels both informative and pleasant while still leaving room for conversation and different interpretations.

The way this post is written makes the whole discussion feel very easygoing and clear, while also keeping enough depth in the topic to make readers interested in sharing their own opinions and continuing the conversation further.
