The East (Part 2)

Part 2 of the October road trip to The East was a day in Dresden.

It was of special interest to me, being familiar with so many cities which used to be behind the Iron Curtain.

I really enjoyed it, and the city is an unusual combination of the modern (as in post World War II), very modern (as in post reunification) and old – the reconstructed bits of the Altstadt.

It was also significant for me as part of seeing how Sachsen differs from Bayern.

The Residenzschloss and its Historic Green Vault (Historisches Grünes Gewölbe) was particularly impressive, but the Dresdner Zwinger and Frauenkirche stand out too.

Our lunch was also a highlight (not that I like my food or anything). Tradition and quality combined with unusual local food. I can certainly recommend the Coselpalais if you’re visiting the city. A pumpkin prosecco – it was the day after Halloween – as an aperitif (pumpkin syrup added to the wine). The food was elderberry soup followed by roast pork with cabbage and dumpling.

We left the city just after 5pm and it took us just 3 hours to travel 250 miles back to Gaimersheim (next to Ingolstadt). Apart from a few miles at either end, it was Autobahn all the way. Traffic was light (public holidays) and the weather was good, but it was dark.

Another place I’d return to anytime.
