Alps II

Summer holidays in August brought another opportunity to head for the mountains.

We had an extra incentive. I was sitting on a voucher for 2 nights in a DAV Hütte, and it was coming close to expiring.

The weather turned out kind – mid summer can bring thunderstorms (not clever in the mountains) or downpours (landslide risk) – but the forecast looked good.

We’d chosen the Schönfeldhütte which is near Schliersee, about an hour southeast of Munich.

The idea was that it’s quite easy to reach carrying the 20kg rucksack with all we’d need for 2 nights away. We could take a cable car up to a point above the Hütte, and then walk down to it.

The plan worked pretty well, although the path down was rough and slippery – not easy for an auld yin like me with that weight to balance.

The Hütte itself was super. We had our own room – midweek, so easier to get. The homecooked food in the evening was delicious. Gemütlichkeit!

Next day we set off up to the surrounding peaks. We got to the top of Taubenstein (1,692m or 5,551ft), Jägerkamp (1,746m/5,700 ft) and Rauhkopf (1,689m).

We tried for Aiplspitz too, but came to a DAV signpost warning us the last little bit was for serious mountaineers only!

Back downhill with our tails between our legs.

All told, 6 hours of hiking. When we got back to the Hütte, it was socks and boots off – then a beer, an Obstler and a big glass of water.

It is wonderful when you stop walking. (I was tempted to get an extra Obstler to rub on my feet.)

Another evening of great food to follow.

Next morning we packed up and headed back down the mountain. Homeward bound. One unexpected highlight was coming across a couple of marmots close to the Hütte – I’d never seen them before.

A memorable trip – and many thanks to Daniela J. who gave me the vouchers!
